What Is the Origin of Air Guitar?
Air guitar is a sort of dance movement that
imitates guitar playing, more precisely, the air guitarist pretends to be
playing heavy metal or rock music on an imaginary guitar, to the sound of
music, but without a real guitar in hand. Air guitar is so popular these days
that many music festivals and clubs organize air guitar contests and there are
several national and world championships as well, but the origins of playing
air guitar are much debated.
Air playing musical instruments probably date
back to the early 20th century, when phonographs became widespread
in households and people had the opportunity to enjoy music the way they wanted
in the privacy of their own homes, even pretending that they were playing the
instrument they were listening to. The first notable and recorded instances of
air guitar playing include the performance of Bill Reed, a member of the
Canadian vocal quartet Diamonds, noted for introducing rhythm and blues to the
wider public and Jimi Hendrix was also known for having been practicing on a
broom stick when he was a child and did not have a real guitar. The artist who
made air guitar really famous was Joe Cocker – his extraordinary performance at
the 1969 Woodstock festival started a tradition.
