Musical Instrument Maintenance at Home and by Professionals
Music instruments, especially the ones that are
played often and intensively, need regular maintenance to be able to deliver
sound of the same quality whenever they are sounded. While some types of
maintenance operations, mostly basic cleaning and preventive measures, can be
done by the owner, others can only be performed by professionals. Follow these maintenance details when you buy used musical instruments online:
Preventive
Measures
When the instrument is not in use, make sure it
is placed safely in its case, with all the locks, zippers or hinges on the case
closed. Whatever material the instrument is made from, never leave it in places
where it is exposed to heat and moisture for a long time, such as in the car or
in the basement and try to keep it away from wide temperature variations as
well.
Instrument
Maintenance that Can Be Done at Home
Try to keep your instrument dry and clean –
don’t use regular household cleaners, there are dedicated cleaning products
available for most types of instruments, such as the polishes for stringed
instruments. Always make sure that the instrument is completely dry when you
place into its case – trapped moisture can cause cracks in the instrument and
it might also ruin its sound.
Professional
Maintenance
Larger, more complex instruments, such as
pianos, should never be cleaned or maintained by the player – they require
professional knowledge and tools as well.
