The brass family of musical instruments has certainly been around for a long time. Moreover, there are lots of variations in sound, texture, shape, and so on. Unlike the woodwind type of instruments, in the case of brass instruments, in order to play them, you need to vibrate with your lips while blowing air through the mouthpiece.

The brass family is extremely large, and many of these instruments are no longer in use. However, the brass instruments can be found in many contemporary orchestras and jazz bands, but they can make different types of music also.  

One of the oldest instruments in the brass family is the trumpet. The trumpet has been used since 1500 BC. In order to produce notes, you need to press on the pistol valves while blowing into this instrument. Trumpets are used for marching bands, jazz bands, orchestras and almost any type of popular music.

The French horn is yet another interesting instrument from the brass family. It has a complicatedly wound type of tubing and it has three lever keys.

The trombone is another popular brass instrument, which uses a slide mechanism for changing its size and sounds. Tubas, cornets or mellophones are some other examples of brass family instruments.
