What Are the Best Instruments to Start with for Kids?
Before determining what the best instruments for kids are, it’s important to think about the basics and get a sense of what kids might not be able to do yet at an early age. Any instruments that require strength, complex levels of dexterity or highly developed lungs might not be suitable. So, if your child is under the age of 5-6, you might want to stay away from most guitars, trumpets, larger drum kits or even grand pianos (the latter mainly since they’re expensive, and it’s unsure that your kid might actually enjoy it in the long run).
Instead, starting small is best. Buying a tiny ukulele for a
4-5 year old is actually a great way to introduce your child to music. Also,
small, toy pianos or even larger electric pianos and organs can be a good idea
alongside violins and flutes. If you want to be more original, cymbals,
xylophones and recorders are also great, especially for kids who are already
going to elementary school. For affordability, look for places that buy and sell used musical instruments.
Of course, it’s also very important to make sure that your child is able to cope with the learning process and that they enjoy the feel and sound of the instrument. If you notice that your little one’s tiny fingers and hands are not yet developed for an instrument like a ukulele or violin, then consider something more simple at first, then ease them into the practice of playing the violin later on. That way they won’t feel too stressed and uncomfortable after those first few lessons.
