Orchestras usually have rules against younger teenagers and children joining their ranks. In some cases, they will even prevent very young children from attending. However, as with every rule, there are exceptions, and there have also been cases of young players and conductors joining orchestras due to their pure talent.

Of course, in the case of famous orchestras like the London Symphony Orchestra, the appointment of a young, 18 year old co-principal trombone player has sparked a lot of talk on social media, since there has never been a younger principal playing for the LSO before. However, many younger players have joined orchestras in the past, including Berry Tuckwell, Gregor Piatigorski and Neville Marriner, all having joined the London Symphony Orchestra at the age of 15.

Now, 15 seems to be the youngest that anyone has played for the LSO, but there were younger members of an orchestra appointed in the past, some of them even conductors.

A good example is 14-year-old Jose Angel Salazar, who was appointed the conductor of the Youth Orchestra of Nueva Esparta in Venezuela six years ago. Also, an 11-year-old prodigy by the name of Matthew Smith made his debut at the Nottingham Royal Concert Hall, where he conducted the city’s Symphony Orchestra as one of the youngest members of an orchestra ever.
